When installing GEIS you should avoid using DOS or Windows to
copy SAS catalogues.
Whenever possible use SAS's PROC COPY procedure.
GEIS is normally run from a network file server, but can
be run on an individual PC.
If you only ever want to use GEIS to conduct one
interview at a time on one PC then you can
leave all files on the C: drive.
The demonstration version will suffice for this.
The following instructions assume that GEIS is
to be installed to a network file server, and
that survey data sets are also kept on the network file server
during piloting.
When the actual survey is running the data sets
would be located on the SAS share server, as described later.
In other words, the data sets for the
development and the execution of a survey are kept separate.
There are four stages in setting up GEIS:
- Install GEIS to the network server.
- Setting up GEIS on a network file server is only done once.
- Set up a share server.
- Similarly, setting up a share server is only done once.
The share server is usually left running all the time.
Since it is accessed across the network
new projects can be added to it as needed.
- Create a project within GEIS.
- For each project various directories and files must be
created on the network file server.
These consist of a CONFID data set and some configuration files.
- Set up interviewing workstations.
- Once a project has been developed the
interviewing workstations are set up.
This consists of copying some initialisation files to each workstation.
